How to choose a cat boarding cattery

What to look for and what to ask before you book your cat into a cattery – so you can go away and actually relax.

Going away is easier when you know your cat is in good hands. Use this checklist when you choose a cattery – whoever you book with.

What to look for

  • Cats only – no barking dogs nearby, so cats stay calm.
  • Private, clean rooms – cats from different homes shouldn't share, and rooms should be easy to clean.
  • Vaccinations required – a good cattery asks for every guest's vaccination card. That protects your cat too.
  • Space and fresh air – room to stretch, climb and look outside, and a safe, secure enclosure.
  • Your cat's routine – their own food, feeding times and medication followed exactly.
  • Time with people – playtime, brushing and a cuddle every day, not just food and water.

Questions to ask

  • Can I see where my cat will stay?
  • What happens if my cat gets ill – which vet do you use?
  • Can you give medication?
  • Will I get updates while I'm away?
  • What are the drop-off and collection times, and what do I need to bring?

Help your cat settle

Bring a blanket or toy that smells of home, keep their usual food, and keep drop-off calm and short. Most cats settle within a day or two.
