Getting ready for your kitten: a checklist

Everything to buy and do before your kitten comes home – from the safe room and litter to food, kitten-proofing and the first week.

Before your kitten arrives

  • A safe room – a quiet room with food, water, a litter box, a bed and a scratcher, where your kitten spends the first 3 to 7 days.
  • Litter box and litter – an open box and a gentle, low-dust litter such as tofu litter.
  • Food and bowls – keep feeding what your kitten eats at the cattery at first, and change food slowly.
  • A scratcher – so claws go on the scratcher, not the couch.
  • Toys – wand toys for play together, and small balls for solo play.
  • A sturdy carrier for the trip home and vet visits.
  • A vet near you – book a first check-up for the first few weeks.

Kitten-proof your home

  • Tuck away cables, cords and blind strings.
  • Keep lilies out of the house – all parts of the lily plant are very poisonous to cats.
  • Close toilet lids, washing machines and tumble dryers, and check them before switching on.
  • Keep medicines, cleaning products, string, hair ties and small objects out of reach.
  • Make sure windows and balconies are safe.

The first week

Keep your kitten in the safe room for the first few days and play together every day. Let family members come in one at a time, and never force your kitten to be held. Introduce other pets slowly, once your kitten is confident – first by scent, then through a door, then in short, calm visits.

Make it easy

Our New Kitten Starter Pack has the litter box, scoop, litter, bowls, brush, nail clipper, a toy and kitten shampoo in one order, and our halaal cat food is the same food our kittens grow up on.
